[Mat 22:36-38 ESV] 36 "Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?" 37 And he said to him, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the great and first commandment."

The New Testament explains that our minds are an integral part of loving God and keeping his commands. While many in the church rightly acknowledge and recognize that mere intellectual assent to the gospel is not enough, the reverse is also not true. Having a heart that means well without knowledge of the gospel and commands of God is not enough. Both must be present to trust and obey the good news of the finished work of Jesus Christ and to love Him and keep His commandments.

This aspect of the mind is true for both understanding and believing the gospel and for obedience after one is saved. Consider the parable of the sower of the seed. The good soil in the parable was like seed that fell on good ground. “[Mat 13:23 ESV] 23 As for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it. He indeed bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty." Understanding the word is integral to belief in the gospel. Admittedly, there are simple minded who will believe and there are intellectual people who will not understand and who suppress the truth. Perhaps this is due to the fact we all know God deep down inside and understand the evidence He has given us in creation and in our conscience, but we need His grace and the Holy Spirit to enlighten our dark minds to complete revelation of Christ. God gets all the glory and we are totally in His hands.
